Van de Hunze tot de Donau, van het lichaam tot AI: vier veelbelovende noordelijke kunstenaars ontvangen stipendium
De Groninger Beeldende Kunst Stipendia en Noordenaars Stipendia 2026 zijn op 13 februari uitgereikt aan vier jonge makers. De Groninger Beeldende Kunst Stipendia bestaan uit twee categorieën: Land, voor een regionaal project gericht op de eigen omgeving in Groningen of Noord-Nederland en Horizon voor een project dat deels buiten onze landsgrenzen wordt ontwikkeld. De Noordenaars Stipendia benoemen ook twee veelbelovende jonge makers uit de drie Noordelijke provincies. In totaal krijgen vier kunstenaars tijd, geld en begeleiding om nieuw werk te maken en hun kunstpraktijk door te ontwikkelen. De winnaars zijn Samantha Pellarini en Radina Kordova voor de Groninger Beeldende Kunst Stipendia. Lily Dollner en Babak Modarresi krijgen de Noordenaars Stipendia toebedeeld. Zij ontvingen de prijs op 13 februari tijdens een ceremonie uit handen van cultuurwethouder Janette Bosma (Gemeente Groningen).
Over de winnaars
Samantha Pellarini (Venezuela, 1994) ontvangt het Groninger Beeldende Kunst Stipendium Land voor haar onderzoeksproject Hunze en andere verhalen: Er stroomt een rivier onder mijn huis!. Dat begon met de ontdekking van de historische loop van de rivier de Hunze onder haar woning in Groningen. Met dit project verbindt Pellarini persoonlijke ervaring aan bredere maatschappelijke en ecologische vraagstukken, zoals klimaatverandering, ruimtelijke ordening en verantwoordelijkheid voor toekomstige landschappen.
Radina Kordova (Bulgarije, 1994) ontvangt het Groninger Beeldende Kunst Stipendium Horizon. Met Van de bron tot de monding en alles daartussenin is ze van plan om 3000 km langs de Donau te wandelen. Beginnend bij de bron in het Zwarte Woud in Duitsland tot aan de monding van de Zwarte Zee in Roemenië, waarbij ze zeven landen doorkruist. Met dit onderzoeks- en performanceproject benadert Kordova de Donau als een meer-dan-menselijke entiteit die culturele, historische en geografische lagen met elkaar verbindt.
Lily Dollner (IE/ UK, 2000) ontvangt het Noordenaars Stipendium. Dollner zal zich in het komende jaar richten op het verdiepen van haar performancepraktijk, waarin ze met absurde acties onze obsessie met ‘productiviteit’ bevraagt, en futiliteit viert. Ze neemt de relatie tussen object, arbeid en lichaam, onder de loep als onafscheidelijke elementen die zich verhouden tot de begrippen waarde, inspanning en tijd. Met dit begrippenkader ontwikkelt Dollner de ‘Labour-Body-Object theory’ als performancescore en fundament voor haar werk.
Babak Modarresi (Iran, 1996) ontvangt het Noordenaars Stipendium. In een onderzoek naar het verschijnsel ‘Jamais Vu’ (vertaald: nooit gezien, een term uit de psychologie, het tegenovergestelde van Déjà Vu) kijkt Modarresi naar de vervreemdende nieuwe werkelijkheden die online ontstaan in het tijdperk van AI. Het archief van ondergrondse en niche Iraanse webcontent dat hij over de jaren heen opbouwde, vormt de basis om te experimenteren met nieuwe virtuele en materiële presentatievormen.
De winnaars zijn gekozen door professionele vakjury’s. Met 75 inzendingen zien de jury’s een indrukwekkende staalkaart van de kracht en diversiteit van makers gevestigd in het noorden. In de selectie woog niet alleen de kwaliteit van het werk, maar vooral ook de ontwikkelvraag wie het stipendium het meest betekenisvol kan inzetten. Alle vier nemen het komende jaar deel aan Artist in Space, het talentontwikkelingsprogramma voor beeldend kunstenaars in Noord-Nederland, dat mogelijk gemaakt wordt door We The North en het Mondriaan Fonds. Hierbij worden ze begeleid door professionals van de Noordenaars, het netwerk van 17 presentatie-instellingen en kunstinitiatieven in Noord-Nederland.

Groninger Beeldende Kunst Stipendia (Land & Horizon)
De stipendia Land en Horizon stimuleren kunstenaars tot 25 jaar om een project uit te voeren, waarmee ze hun praktijk verder ontwikkelen, een artistieke bijdrage leveren aan het werkveld en de stad Groningen. Elk stipendium bestaat uit een bedrag van 20.000 euro, mogelijk gemaakt door de Gemeente Groningen, en is gekoppeld aan Artist in Space (via Noordenaars) ter waarde van 12.500 euro.
Noordenaars Stipendia
Het Noordenaars stipendium wordt uitgereikt om een cruciale verdieping van de artistieke praktijk van kunstenaars in Groningen, Fryslân en Drenthe mogelijk te maken. Hierbij is er ruimte voor oefening en experiment. De Noordenaars Stipendia bestaan uit een honorarium van 19.000 euro en is gekoppeld aan een Artist in Space budget van 13.500 euro.
From the Hunze to the Danube, from the body to AI: four promising Northern artists receive a stipend
The Groninger Visual Arts Stipends and Noordenaars Stipends 2026 were awarded on February 13 to four young makers. The Groninger Visual Arts Stipends consist of two categories: Land, for a regional project focused on one’s own surroundings in Groningen or Northern Netherlands, and Horizon for a project that is developed partly outside our national borders. The Noordenaars Stipends also name two promising young makers from the three Northern provinces. In total, four artists receive time, money and guidance to make new work and further develop their artistic practice. The winners are Samantha Pellarini and Radina Kordova for the Groninger Visual Arts Stipends. Lily Dollner and Babak Modarresi are awarded the Noordenaars Stipends. About the winners
Samantha Pellarini (Venezuela, 1994) receives the Groninger Visual Arts Stipend Land for her research project Hunze and other stories: There is a river flowing under my house!. That began with the discovery of the historical course of the river Hunze under her home in Groningen. With this project, Pellarini connects personal experience to broader social and ecological issues, such as climate change, spatial planning and responsibility for future landscapes.
Radina Kordova (Bulgaria, 1994) receives the Groninger Visual Arts Stipend Horizon. With From the source to the mouth and everything in between she plans to walk 3000 km along the Danube. Starting at the source in the Black Forest in Germany to the mouth of the Black Sea in Romania, crossing seven countries. With this research and performance project, Kordova approaches the Danube as a more-than-human entity that connects cultural, historical and geographical layers.
Lily Dollner (IE/ UK, 2000) receives the Noordenaars Stipend. In the coming year, Dollner will focus on deepening her performance practice, in which she questions our obsession with ‘productivity’ through absurd actions, and celebrates futility. She examines the relationship between object, labour and body as inseparable elements that relate to the concepts of value, effort and time. With this conceptual framework, Dollner develops the ‘Labour-Body-Object theory’ as a performance score and foundation for her work.
Babak Modarresi (Iran, 1996) receives the Noordenaars Stipend. In a study of the phenomenon ‘Jamais Vu’ (translated: never seen, a term from psychology, the opposite of Déjà Vu) Modarresi looks at the alienating new realities that arise online in the age of AI. The archive of underground and niche Iranian web content that he has built up over the years forms the basis for experimenting with new virtual and material forms of presentation.
The winners were selected by professional expert juries. With 75 submissions, the juries see an impressive cross-section of the strength and diversity of makers based in the North. In the selection, not only the quality of the work weighed, but above all the developmental question of who can use the stipend most meaningfully. All four will participate in Artist in Space in the coming year, the talent development programme for visual artists in Northern Netherlands, made possible by We The North and the Mondriaan Fund. They are guided in this by professionals from the Noordenaars, the network of 17 presentation institutions and art initiatives in Northern Netherlands.

Groninger Visual Arts Stipends (Land & Horizon)
The Land and Horizon stipends encourage artists up to 25 years of age to carry out a project, through which they further develop their practice, make an artistic contribution to the field and to the city of Groningen. Each stipend consists of an amount of 20,000 euros, made possible by the Municipality of Groningen, and is linked to Artist in Space (via Noordenaars) with a value of 12,500 euros.
Noordenaars Stipends
The Noordenaars stipend is awarded to make a crucial deepening of the artistic practice of artists in Groningen, Fryslân and Drenthe possible. There is room here for practice and experiment. The Noordenaars Stipends consist of a fee of 19,000 euros and is linked to an Artist in Space budget of 13,500 euros.
De kracht van Artist in Space ligt in de combinatie van zorgvuldige ondersteuning van kunstenaars enerzijds en de stevige inbedding in het regionale kunstveld anderzijds. De combinatie van financiële zekerheid, coaching en netwerkvorming geeft kunstenaars de ruimte om hun praktijk te verdiepen en nieuwe samenwerkingen aan te gaan.
