Bierumer School, Bierum
06.11.2026, 14:00 opening
t/m 04.12.2026

No bodies function without the life sustaining organs, these include the brain, the heart and lungs.
Body Without Organs looks toward a hypothetical, yet historically rooted, scenario where the brain organ is being questioned for its stability and productivity. What is the value of the brain and its rational function, and why have some human cultures assigned such a superior role to it?
Klaudija and Lily, following their clown training at Philippe Gaulier this summer, have taken the historical procedure of lobotomy as a metaphor to re-evaluate the power and dominance that brains hold inside and outside our bodies.
During their stay at Bierumer School, they contextualized the concept of lobotomy as a possible methodology in order to escape the late-stage capitalist trap of overthinking and overstimulation, where the idea of constant gain and perfected labour has become the main impetus of our contemporary lives.
Following the theoretical framework of French psychoanalyst Deleuze & philosopher Guattari, Body Without Organs is a declaration not against the brain as an organ but against its perceived dominance and prescribed superiority.
To understand our theory of Lobotomism, we emphasize the power of metaphors and how they shape our understanding. We take the usage of metaphors from a feminist discourse, particularly found in Donna Haraway’s (1988) concept-specific framework of situated knowledge. Haraway uses the metaphor of vision to both reclaim it from objectivizing means and to indicate how the sensory systems are embodied and situated in material and conceptual discourses. It is in the same manner we take lobotomy, for both reclaiming the dark history of psychosurgery and as an indication for a potential paradigm shift for thinking with metaphors.
Utilizing a specific metaphor in order to instigate a novel paradigm shift that opposes and proposes the way out of capitalism stands as the ultimate speculation, yet the speculative aspect can be a legitimate method in times when a collective consciousness has transformed into a false consciousness.
It is thus essential for us to hold grave importance to the history of mental illnesses and the fraught treatments that was and is being used in medical systems, particularly that of psychiatric units.

About the artists
Klaudija Ylaite (1997, LT) and Lily Dollner (2000, UK) are visual artists working within the field of performance art, with a shared interest in endurance based practices. While Klaudija takes an esoteric approach to performance, working with rituals, Lily draws from the concept of labor and futility as the main themes in her performances. Both hold a strong dogmatic aversion to capitalist notions of quick fixes and fast healing.
Their collaboration began this summer at the clown school of Phillipe Gaulier in Paris. There, they reworked their practices in the context of The Flop; the inevitable failure and resurrection of a joke. They learned to prioritize the intimacy between audience and performer, and to seek pleasure in the making. Body Without Organs is their first collaborative work, where they meet firmly at the intersection of dark comedy, satire, and radical speculation.
